guest post: Mermaid Look

Today’s guest post comes from the wonderful Peter Minkoff. Peter is a beauty and fashion editor for Your Style Forecast as well as a freelance menswear fashion stylist and he’s from Brisbane, Australia.

When he pitched this article to me, I begged him to write it as I love the whole look and all the pretty colours!

Mermaid look is everything right now! Unless you’ve been living under a rock you sure have noticed all the rainbow colored hairdos (eyebrows and beards, too!), outfits and shoes strolling happily down the streets of your city. In fact, wherever we look, whether it’s real life or a TV/net commercial, we sure are seeing rainbow colors and falling in love with them over and over again.

It’s not really clear when and where everything started but the first time we actually noticed it we were reluctant to accept it – after all, it was weird, it was too colorful for anything business-like, it was simply too unusual. However, just as it happens with all cool fashion trends, this one caught up really soon, especially because it was accepted by little Kylie Jenner. It also didn’t hurt it that it came about sometime during spring/summer so the colors forced by the, what will later become “mermaid look”, were perfectly suitable for the hot summer days, beach parties and all those leisure vibes.

So, what exactly is this mermaid trend?

Coloring your hair unexpected shades of grey, red, pink, blue, hot pink, yellow, turquoise, deep blue and green is a pretty easy way to sum this trend up.

The “granny style” that came before the “mermaid” trend sported grey locks that looked amazing on almost anyone who tried it! Sure, it was advised for younger people to try it out as their skins were still smooth and young-looking so there was no fear of someone actually looking aged due to their new ‘do. It wasn’t long before the “mermaid” trend came about and everyone wanted to replace the grey with some hot color.

Girls, boys – you name it – everyone became obsessed with going colorful on their hair and, apparently, making a statement with it. Like all unusual trends this one too became a synonym for hipster fashion but we didn’t mind. Blue eyed girls with their blue hairs and a huge smile were definitely worth all the head-turning during summer! And the boys, mh! Resembling mythical creatures from the deep, with their fashionable green ‘dos and long pink beards… yum! If only Ariel had known there would ever be a trend like this, she’d definitely think twice before choosing Prince Eric over a hot, turquoise-haired merman.

Is the mermaid trend limited to hair only?

Absolutely not! Many a cosmetic labels launched nail designs, eye shadows, mascaras and lipsticks in mermaid shades (some labels are calling them ‘macaroon colors’) and as it seems, the trend isn’t likely to go away. More and more girls are hopping on the train to mermaid-town and it’s looking fabulous! It may be unusual and it may take some time to get used to, but some shades are simply to die for.

How did the fashion world react to the mermaid look?

Let’s just say it has definitely paid tribute to it! From pastels dominating virtually every designer’s collection to gauzy gowns and sequins, the iconic look of the mermaid became the it factor to dress by.

“Sheer and sexy queen-of-the-sea gowns dominated at Atelier Versace’s Fall Couture 2015 show, while Givenchy showed a flared sequined skirt straight out of Ariel’s dreams for its Resort 2016 collection”.

The last info we have is that the summer of 2016 is going to be mermaid-huge! So, make sure you get your trendy one piece swimsuit on a latest swimwear sale before they are all sold out!

Who should go by mermaid look?

Well, we’d love to say anyone but we can’t… unless you are working and living in a super easy-going environment, that is. Anyone who is in a “strict” line of business such as government, medicine, economy, education, marketing or anything that has to do with serious matters isn’t really the good candidate for the look. However, it’s a perfect fit for all the free, restless souls out there, artists, stage performers and all others who simply don’t care!

Thanks again to Peter for a great post.

Do you consider yourself part of the “mermaid look” club?

So I’m not a beauty guru, nor do I profess to be and we all know that my hair can be a bit… temperamental to say the least.

I have however jumped on the bandwagon and become an advocate for coconut oil in all its rich, nutty glory. My Mum, who swears by it, bought me and my sister a tub of the Sainsbury’s one (£4.50) each for Christmas and I’ve been using it once a fortnight since then.
It isn’t just a fad though, it really does make a difference! My hair is softer yet stronger and has a really lovely shine to it despite all the bleach and heat its gone through over the years.

Because of this, I thought I’d make a vlog showing you how I apply the coconut oil to my hair and see if you can see the difference it makes. Perhaps it will inspire some of you to give it a go yourselves. It’s much cheaper than most of the hot oil treatments I’ve seen in stores but I reckon it’s just as good.

Do you use any lifesaving products on your hair?
Have you tried coconut oil for anything?

So when we covered up my roots, we tried this Wella Instamatic Smokey Amethyst toner and the results are awesome! It’s the perfect blend between silver and lilac for me and the roots have virtually gone.

Be warned, this wasn’t easy! We used a 9% peroxide on my roots, then the toner mixed in with some 3% worked through to the ends… At least, I think that’s what it was but I can confirm with Emily if anyone out there is skilled enough to want to do it themselves!

adventures: Scissors Christchurch Ladies’ Night*

So I’ve had my head firmly lodged in the books as I’m almost halfway through my final year of my degree – eek! – but when Scissors Salon Christchurch invited me to their Ladies’ Night last week – I couldn’t refuse! After all, it’s essential when you’ve got a lot of work to do that you #treatyoself from time to time (as Tom and Donna taught us in Parks and Rec).

treatyo

The event was on Thursday 26th November in the evening and I brought my Nan along so she could treat herself too. We were offered complementary Prosecco and some delicious canapés, both savory and sweet, which was a really nice touch.

The stylists were offering ‘hair tweaks’ to guests so I got my hair beautifully curled for a change!

In addition to this, the salon had a private colour consultation room where you could get expert advice and tips about how to achieve the colour you want, without wrecking your hair.

(Scissors Winton already helped me do this though, see my journey to silver hair posts!)

A raffle was also part of the evening with funds being raised for the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospices charity, Julia’s House and there were some great prizes kindly donated by several businesses.

We were kindly given a jam-packed goodie bag filled with little treats from various businesses. This not only included salon-approved haircare products but treats from The Sweets Emporium, The Bay Tree Health Store and even money off vouchers!

I also had a quick chat with Director Mia Parmar, who told me that Francesco Group’s recent campaigns are all about stressing that their salons are for people of all ages, genders and styles.

Thankyou Scissors Christchurch for giving my Nan and I a lovely evening – I’m sure we’ll be popping into one of your Salons for the specialist treatment again as we felt really welcomed and valued there!

my journey to silver hair: the results!

In the beginning, me and my best friend Emily went through the painstaking process of getting from red to blonde, then I received a luxury cut from Elli and a gorgeous blowdry from Sophie. A year after I decided to start the journey, here I am happy to report that I have finally (with the help of some great professionals) achieved my dream hair, in all it’s silver glory!

My final Salon Experience visit to Scissors Winton was always going to be a long one: the Colour treatment. The lovely Jenise had already talked me through the different stages of what we would be doing that day, and we discussed products and end goals at the beginning of the appointment. A colour expert, Jenise knew just what to do to get me my silver hair, but she did say that it would be best to go a couple of shades darker to start with, in order that when I wash the hair, the colour didn’t fade out too quickly.

So what was the exact process?

Stage One: Get rid of those roots!

my_journey_to_silver_hair_the_results_scissors_salons_before

This needed a scalp bleach which I have had before but boy, are they tingly – not for the faint hearted! Don’t do these without previous experience or a trained professional, you risk serious damage to your hair and scalp.

Stage Two: Lightening out the yellowy tones

my_journey_to_silver_hair_the_results_scissors_salons_lightener

Slightly less irritant, this lightener was for removing the brassy, yellowy blonde that had been left by this bleach and previous bleaches. For silver, you want the hair to be as white as possible as a base.
(Please excuse my double chin, awkward selfie angle.)

Stage Three: The silver toner

my_journey_to_silver_hair_the_results_scissors_salons_during_lightener

A lot less irritant – it even smells nice in a weird way! Jenise was saying that with this colour especially, it can be hard to tell the actual shade of the hair because of the purple/grey colour of the product, so it’s best to push the product around to try and see the hair underneath before you rinse.

All about the T.L.C:
The perks of my Scissors Winton experience were as before: invigorating scalp massage, deep cleansing shampoo and conditioner, complimentary beverages, opportunities to purchase and add-on treatments and products at a discount… all with great, accommodating service!

The end result

my_journey_to_silver_hair_the_results_scissors_salons_before_after

I couldn’t be happier! Jenise has advised that I use a bit of lightener on the ends to take out the slight blonde tones left that snuck their way through, but otherwise I have my dream hair.
I thoroughly recommend Scissors Salons for any treatment, whether it’s a midweek blow dry to perk you up or a three-hour colour transformation. All of the staff are professional, talented and really friendly and I got some top care tips for keeping this colour and cut.

Thanks especially to Elli, Sophie and Jenise for my experiences!
